How to take just one page (or a few) out of a PDF

When you are asked for "just the signed page" or the first page of a bill, you don't have to send the whole document. Here is how to extract pages and build a new file.

“Just send me the signed page.” “I need the first page of the bill.” “Send me chapter 3.” When you're asked for part of a long document, sending the whole file has downsides: you share too much information, the file is bigger, and the other person has to hunt for what they need. Extracting the right pages takes less than a minute.

When it comes in handy

  • Proof of address: bills and bank statements have several pages, but the address is usually on the first one.
  • Contracts: the signature page or a specific appendix.
  • School: the topic you need to study from a PDF book, or each team member's part.
  • Work: a quote, or a single invoice from a PDF that contains several.

How to extract pages step by step

  1. Open Extract pages and select your PDF. You'll see a thumbnail of each page.
  2. Click the pages you want to keep. They don't have to be consecutive: you can pick, for example, pages 1, 4 and 9.
  3. Press “Extract pages”. A new PDF is created with just the ones you chose.
  4. Download it and check it. Your original file doesn't change.
Tip: before sending, check whether that page has data you don't want to share, like your balance or account number. You can hide it with Redact PDF.

Extract pages, split or delete?

They're similar tasks, but each has its own tool:

  • Extract pages: you want some pages in a single new file.
  • Split PDF: you want all the pages, but each in its own file. For example, a PDF with payslips for 15 people, so you can send each person theirs.
  • Removing a few pages: use Extract pages and select all except the ones you don't need.

Combining pages from several documents

If you need to build a file with pages from different PDFs, for example the first page of three different bills:

  1. Extract the page you need from each document.
  2. Combine the results with Merge PDF.
  3. If the order isn't what you wanted, fix it with Organize PDF.

This method is useful for building application packets; the guide how to combine your documents into a single PDF for an application explains it in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Is quality lost when extracting pages?

No. The pages are copied exactly as they are in the original, without recompressing the text or images.

Can I do it from my phone?

Yes. The thumbnails adapt to the screen and you just tap the pages you want to keep.

My PDF has more than 300 pages. What do I do?

First split it into smaller parts with Split PDF, then extract the pages you need from each part.

Ready to do it?

Keep only the pages you need. Free, no sign-up, right in your browser.
