When your audio won't play where you need it

A WhatsApp voice note that won't open on your computer, a phone recording in M4A your video editor doesn't recognize, a huge WAV file that won't fit in an email, or a FLAC song your car can't read. They're all format problems, and they're solved by converting the file to a compatible one.

Convert audio accepts MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, WMA, AMR, AIFF and more, and produces the format you choose at the highest quality for each: MP3 at 320 kbps, M4A at 256 kbps, and lossless formats (WAV and FLAC) identical to the original.

Which format should I choose?

MP3

Plays on absolutely everything: phones, cars, speakers, TVs and any program. If you don't know which to pick, pick MP3.

WAV

Uncompressed audio. It's what editing programs, radio stations and some phone systems ask for. It's much bigger.

M4A

Apple's format: ideal for iPhone, iTunes and ringtones. Sounds great at a small size.

FLAC, OGG and OPUS

FLAC keeps perfect quality at half the size of WAV. OGG is an open format widely used in games and Linux. OPUS is excellent for voice and podcasts.

About sound quality

Converting doesn't improve the audio. If the original is a low-quality MP3, turning it into WAV or FLAC won't recover what was already lost; it'll just make the file bigger.

Nothing is lost going from one lossless format to another. Between WAV, FLAC and AIFF the conversion is exact.

To save space, instead of converting use Compress audio, which is made for that.

Common problems and how to fix them

My WhatsApp voice note is .opus or .ogg

Upload it as is and convert it to MP3: you'll be able to open it on any computer or edit it.

The converted file is much bigger

That's normal when converting to WAV or FLAC, which don't compress the sound (or compress it losslessly). For a light file, choose MP3, M4A or OPUS.

It says the file couldn't be read

It may be damaged or incomplete. Check that it plays on your device. If it's a video, use Video to MP3.
