The right format for every place

An iPhone MOV that won't open on a Windows computer, an MKV recording your TV doesn't recognize, an old AVI no social network accepts, or a video you want to turn into a GIF for a presentation. Convert video solves these problems by changing the file's format.

Whenever possible, we only change the video's "wrapper" without recompressing the picture or the sound. For example, most iPhone MOVs become MP4 in seconds with identical quality. When that's not possible, the video is re-encoded at a quality visually equal to the original.

Which format should I choose?

MP4

Plays everywhere: phones, computers, TVs, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. If in doubt, choose MP4.

MOV

Apple's format. Useful for editing in iMovie or Final Cut and for Mac computers.

MKV and WEBM

MKV supports almost any kind of video and audio. WEBM is the open format designed for websites.

AVI and GIF

AVI is for DVD players and older equipment. GIF creates a silent animation (videos up to 1 minute), ideal for presentations and messages.

How to convert a video

01

Upload your video

Up to 150 MB. For formats that need re-encoding, the video can be up to 10 minutes long.

02

Choose the format

MP4 is the safest option for sharing.

03

Wait and download

You'll see the actual progress percentage. If other videos are being processed, yours will wait its turn for a moment.

Why is it sometimes instant and sometimes slow?

A video file has two parts: the container (MP4, MOV, MKV…) and the codecs used to store the picture and sound (H.264, AAC…). If the video's codec is already compatible with the format you chose, we only change the container: it takes seconds and nothing is lost.

If it isn't compatible (for example, AVI to MP4, or any video to WEBM or GIF), the picture has to be re-encoded, which takes roughly as long as the video lasts. When it's done we tell you which of the two methods was used.

Common problems

My video is longer than 10 minutes

If the format needs re-encoding, split the video with Trim video in fast mode (it has no length limit) and convert each part.

The GIF is very large

GIFs aren't very efficient. Trim the video to the few seconds you need before converting it.

It says it couldn't read the video

It may be damaged or incomplete. Check that it plays on your device before uploading it.

Frequently asked questions about converting video

Is quality lost?

When only the container changes, no. When re-encoding is needed, a very high quality is used where the difference isn't visible to the naked eye.
