Lighter audio for sending and sharing

An hour-long WAV recording can weigh more than 600 MB; the same recording as a 128 kbps MP3 is around 55 MB. That difference decides whether you can email it, upload it to a school platform or keep it on your phone.

Compress audio converts your file to MP3 at the bitrate you choose. The lower the bitrate, the smaller the file. For most people, the recommended level sounds the same as the original on regular headphones and speakers.

Which level should I choose?

Low (192 kbps)

For music you want to keep at very good quality while taking less space.

Recommended (128 kbps)

The standard for many online services. A good balance for music and voice.

High (64 kbps, mono)

Designed for voice: recorded classes, interviews, meetings, podcasts or voice notes. The file ends up very light and the voice is perfectly clear.

If it was already a light MP3

If your MP3 already had an equal or lower bitrate, we don't make it worse: it's returned as is and we let you know.

How to compress audio step by step

01

Upload your audio

Up to 150 MB and 2 hours long.

02

Choose the level

Music: low or recommended. Voice only: high.

03

Download

You'll see the original size, the final size and the reduction percentage. Listen to the result before deleting the original.

Tips to shrink it even more

Cut what you don't need. If the recording has minutes of silence at the start or end, trim it first with Trim audio.

For voice, use mono. The high level converts to a single channel: on a voice recording you won't notice, and the file is half the size.

If the recording sounds quiet, level it with Change volume before sharing it.

What happens to your files

Your audio is sent to our server only to compress it. The original is deleted as soon as the process ends, and the result is available through a private link that's deleted automatically shortly after. We don't listen to or share your files.

Frequently asked questions about compressing audio

What format does the audio end up in?

MP3, the most compatible format. If you need another format, use Convert audio.

Can you hear the difference?

At the low and recommended levels, not on most equipment. At the high level, music loses some brightness, but voice stays clear.

How much does it shrink?

It depends on the original. A WAV usually shrinks by more than 85%; an MP3 that was already compressed, much less.

Does it cost anything?

No. It's free with no sign-up. The site is supported by ads.
